The Owl House

An animated fantasy/horror comedy show, The Owl House depicts both a more realistic world (Human Realm) and a fantasy world (Demon Realm) containing witches and demons and magic galore. The show follows the adventures of a human girl, Luz, who meets and eventually finds family in a witch called Eda the Owl Lady and a fox-like demon, King as they work together to survive as outcasts in the Demon Realm and solve each of their personal problems while working against Emperor Belos who is striving for witch genocide in the Demon Realm.

Pacing: 7/10

The Owl House was found to be slower-paced, with a mean of 11.37 cuts/minute. While the show had plenty of action in the form of fight scenes, the animated scenes were often stable and from a wider perspective, resulting in fewer cuts.

Fantasy: 1/10

The Owl House was considered almost entirely fantasy as it took place in a fantasy world (i.e. Demon Realm) with magical creatures (e.g. witches, demons) who could utilize magic powers and/or alter their bodies in physically impossible ways (e.g. detachable body parts). As a result, distinct instances of fantasy were not recorded and the show was designated as tied with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and SpongeBob SquarePants for having the greatest levels of fantasy.

Note: episodes besides the three evaluated may have involved less fantasy, as a “Human Realm” also exists in the show and may have been the more predominant setting in earlier episodes.

Violence: 2/10

Violence was prevalent throughout The Owl House as the characters physically fought and/or captured monsters for bounty and fought off enemies along the way (i.e. the Emperor’s minions). On average, there were 9.33 violent incidents/episode or 0.39 incidents/minute.

Prosocial: 5/10

The Owl House had a moderate number of prosocial behaviors recorded from the three episodes viewed. The main characters often comforted each other and worked together to survive, fight monsters, and protect themselves from their enemies (e.g. the Emperor). On average, there were 14.67 prosocial incidents/episode or 0.62 incidents/minute.

The Owl House did not incorporate any interactive elements throughout the show.
