Cocomelon

This educational children’s show largely consists of nursery rhymes for familiar tasks like tying shoelaces and features the life of toddler JJ, his older brother TomTom, older sister YoYo, their parents and grandparents, and JJ’s friends and teacher at school. The show is presented in the form of 3D animation with heavy repetition in song lyrics and imagery. The show is designed for toddlers, with bright colors, no sharp edges, low perspective shots, and consistent kindness between the characters. Cocomelon’s episode content is also largely determined by the episode’s performance when piloted on YouTube.

Cocomelon was found to be the fastest paced show of the ten evaluated, with a mean of 22.47 cuts/minute. While the episodes did not present large amounts of action, the animators constantly changed the perspective that one viewed the scene, producing a high frequency of cuts throughout the show.

Fantasy: 6/10

While some of the episodes viewed contain little to no fantasy at all (i.e. “Family Fun with Cocomelon” and “Fun with JJ and Friends”), others contained moderate levels depending on the subject at hand. In particular, “Nursery Rhymes with JJ” was found to have 11 instances of fantasy over the course of 23.1 minutes. These incidents largely consisted of human-sized anthropomorphic animals interacting with the main characters. For example, JJ is pictured fishing, skipping stones, and blowing bubbles with ducklings. On average, Cocomelon presented 4 fantastical incidents/episode or 0.17 incidents/minute.

Similar to the fantasy category, Cocomelon contained moderate to no violence in the episodes viewed. “Nursery Rhymes with JJ” contained the most violence; there were 4 incidents recorded that arose from a segment where anthropomorphic pigs dealt with an anthropomorphic wolf stealing their food.
